I always pondered what the meaning of synergy is? I could not understand the deep and the full meaning of the word ‘synergy’. I read the definition of the word ‘synergy’ but did not understand what it really means. Then one day when I was learning about the creative diversity in the CIC course a past experience came to mind and I shouted “yeah now I understand what the meaning of synergy is”. In this article I am going to share that past experience which I had during my university life and I will share how the concept of creative diversity helps me to understand the concept of synergy.
I am sharing an experience from a project of my university life. We were a group of students who were doing a class project. Members of the group were selected by our professor. I was made the group leader. I was not happy with some members of my group. I assumed when the group was made that there would be some weak students who would not be helpful for our project. Anyway I could not change that therefore I accept the situation as it was and the project got started. As I was the group leader it was necessary for me to complete the project. My job was to plan, divide the tasks to be done, coordinate and complete the project successfully. At that time I knew I would have to do a lot of work in the end because of some weak members of my team.
Initially I assigned tasks randomly to group members and thought in my mind that at the end of the project I would have to complete these tasks. I was resilient in delegating the work to any member of the group. My thinking was changed when one time I assigned a task to a member and I was expecting that the person would not be able to complete it and at the end of the project I would be doing that group member’s task. But what happened was that person turned out to be a genius in doing that kind of task. That assigned task was completed so well in a way that even I could not complete that task in such a good manner. I was astonished and I could at how well the task was completed. Later I came to realize that the person liked to do that kind of task. That person was very interested in those kinds of tasks. Therefore I tried this idea with other members of the group as well. I first discussed the task with all the group members before assigning it and tried to find who took interest in that kind of task and then assign those tasks to them. In this way I was able to assign the task to group members who really liked to do those tasks.
I was astonished of the outcomes. I couldn’t believe in the results. Therefore I started collaborating more in problem solving and we started to produce the best solution to the problems which we were facing as a team because everyone was picking the part which he could do the best and share his or her knowledge with other group members. The complete project was run this way and our project was one of the best projects of the class.
I learned that the project was successful because our team was comprised of very diverse people. The project was successful because we were a group of people who were diverse in thinking and we were producing the efficient, most optimum and creative solutions to the problems we were facing. For example one group member was extremely good in documentation, one was very good in designing, and one was very good in internet research. When facing a problem during the project we incorporated the input from each and every member according to his or her specialty to give us the best input. In this way we worked on the similarities or the things which added to the solution of the problem. Therefore we were able to generate the optimum and creative solution to the problems.
I also learned that due to the diverse people in the group a synergetic environment was created. If I did not delegate the work to people and try to do most of the work by myself then that project would not have been successful. If I followed my assumption and did not try to deeply understand the other members of the group I would not have been able to create an environment where everybody is highly productive. From that experience I learned that I have to believe in people somehow because in the end it turns out to be great. We have to collaborate and listen to each member of our group so that we can produce the highly optimum solution. This is what synergy is all about. It’s about depending upon each other and producing the solution in which everybody participates. In this way I understand the meaning of synergy with the help of the concept of creative diversity.
In conclusion, this was the best experience of my life and now I understand the meaning of synergy, it’s all about understanding other people and putting aside the differences and working on the similarities all together. Synergy was in the atmosphere among us when we were collaborating and helping out each other and incorporating diversified thinking. I completely understood the concept of synergy recently when I was learning about creative diversity in CIC course. Now I have decided to apply the principles learned throughout my future projects.
